Allied Medical Sciences
The Division of Allied Medical Sciences offer Bachelor of Science (Nursing), Doctor of Physical Therapy and Several Programs in Paramedical technologies.
Bachelor of Science (Nursing)
This program is offered by the School of Nursing, which is a constituent school of the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Medical Sciences. The objective of the program is to create a cadre of highly competent nursing staff to be gainfully utilized in the fields of patient care, nursing research, nursing administration and teaching. It will supplement needs of IUH and IUWH and the country at large.
Courses of Study
The BS (Nursing) is a 4 years program of 159 credit hours. The first two semesters cover initial levels of various Nursing, Biochemistry, Mathematics and English courses. Subsequently, the students are exposed to advanced studies in adult health, family health, and knowledge about various drugs is provided. Clinical teaching is undertaken in the hospital setting from the very beginning through four years of studies.
Fundamentals of Nursing (Credit Hours 12)
The following topics will be covered. Introduction to the basic concepts of nursing as a profession and use of therapeutic communication in clinical practice. Assessment of the patients’ basic physiological and psychological needs according to Maslow’s Hierarchy and performing basic skills of nursing care on patients in hospital setting. Knowledge related to theoretical concepts, values, and norms of the profession, learning skills for providing basic nursing care to hospitalized patients. Assessment of patient needs by use of Gordon’s Functional Health Pattern.
Adult Health Nursing (Credit Hours 20)
The following topics will be covered. Assisting students in recognizing the effects of disease leading to alteration in normal functioning of the body. Emphasis on effective utilization of the nursing process to assist the client to return to an optimum level of well being, providing an opportunity for students to care for the patients with various neurological, endocrine, musculoskeletal, and ENT related disorders in emergency and other critical care settings. Emphasis on utilization of nursing process in extending holistic nursing care to patients.
Community Health Nursing (Credit Hours 05)
The following topics will be covered. Introduction of the concepts of health, well being and their relationship to community health nursing. Focus on the concept of Primary Health Care and its application including elements and principles within community settings. Learning the components of environment and identifying the effects of poor water supply, sanitation, housing etc. on health through class discussion and field visits. Components of health education, community services and organizations. Introduction to the basic concepts of epidemiology while working with the families in the community through home visiting.
Nursing Ethics & History (Credit Hours 02)
The following topics will be covered. Introduction to the concept of ethics, providing opportunities for discussion of concepts on moral, ethical, legal and professional responsibilities of nurses, patients, and institutions. Helping students to identify ethical concern and contributing to nursing practice.
Family Health: Maternal and Child Health (Credit Hours 06)
The following topics will be covered. Focus on the role of Community Health Nurses in providing family centred care with focus on maternal and child health. Emphases on care, prevention of disease, promotion and maintenance of health and rehabilitation. Knowledge and skills to facilitate care of childbearing women and care of infants and young children. Other important Primary Health Care component in Family Planning and Prevention of Communicable Diseases through immunization.
Child Health Nursing (Credit Hours 08)
The following topics will be covered. Focus on concepts, theories and empirical knowledge related to health needs of children using a nursing perspective and a family-centred approach. Providing practice opportunities to work with infants and children and their families in a variety of settings.
Nursing Leadership & Management (Credit Hours 03)
Focus on principles of leadership, management and organizational concepts. Exploring nurses’ role and functions as coordinator of care for individuals and groups within the health care system.
Health Assessment (Credit Hours 03)
The following topics will be covered. Providing knowledge and skills necessary to perform health assessment of individual
clients of all ages. Emphasis on taking a comprehensive health history and use of appropriate nursing diagnoses. Opportunities provided to apply assessment skills in a variety of settings.
Mental Health Nursing (Credit Hours 06)
The following topics will be covered. Holistic approach to understanding the concepts of health; patterns of health and nursing roles in working with clients in a variety of mental health setting.
Advance Concepts in Nursing (Credit Hours 10)
The following topics will be covered. Understanding of comprehensive nursing care of individuals at hospital and community settings, focusing on physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs. Emphasis on the use of the nursing process in care of medical, surgical and mental health conditions and rehabilitation of these patients.
Concepts of Anatomy & Physiology (Credit Hours 07)
The following topics will be covered. Introduction to the normal functions & structures of human body. Emphasis on the application of knowledge to nursing care situations.
Pathophysiology (Credit Hours 05)
The following topics will be covered. Selected pathologies at the cellular, organ and systems levels. The development, manifestations and effects of these pathologies on human physiological functioning are explored.
Biochemistry (Credit Hours 03)
The following topics will be covered. Focus on major biomolecules including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acid, their structure, analysis and biochemical functions.
Microbiology (Credit Hours 03)
The following topics will be covered. Introducing basic scientific principles of microbiology. Application of principles of microbiology in hospital and community environment.
Nursing Research (Credit Hours 03)
Introducing the concepts of the research process and its application to nursing practice. Emphasis on students becoming knowledgeable consumers of research as they expand their nursing practice.
Pharmacology & Medical Maths (Credit Hours 04)
The following topics will be covered. Providing basic concepts of pharmacology and emphasis on development of knowledge about classifications, legal ethical aspects and nursing responsibilities of medication administration, basic dosages, calculations and documentation of administering the dosage. Enhancement of knowledge about drugs, their classification, therapeutic effects, anticipated reactions, toxic effects and abuse. Review of basic mathematical skills applied to nursing practice.
Nutrition (Credit Hours 03)
The following topics will be covered. Basic concepts of nutrition and nutritional requirements for maintenance of health and factors affecting eating habits and their relationship to an individual’s nutritional status and health. It also increases understanding of the role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of diet related diseases both in the community and hospital setting.
Tropical and Communicable Diseases (Credit Hours 02)
The following topics will be covered. Assisting students in development of knowledge, skills and attitude to provide care to clients with various communicable diseases. The emphasis on prevention, management and treatment of communicable diseases prevalent in Pakistan. Students utilize the functional health patterns and nursing process to provide health care in the community and hospital setting. Concepts of tropical diseases on the basis of three approaches; i.e., epidemiological triad, chain of infection and web of causation.
Developmental Psychology (Credit Hours 02)
The following topics will be covered. General field of psychology, its origins and development as a science of human behavior. The emphasis is on development psychology, discussing the major contributions of various development psychologists. Role of nurses in providing support to clients of various age groups, with alterations in their normal developmental stages.
Behavioral Psychology (Credit Hours 03)
The following topics will be covered. Different psychological disorders with emphasis on planning nursing care and applying therapeutic communication skills on the patients in clinical setting.
Introduction to Biostatistics (Credit Hours 03)
The following topics will be covered. Knowledge and skills to present and analyse data in community and make an inference/decision about a given population. Introduction to basic concepts of biostatistics.
English (Credit Hours 18)
The following topics will be covered. Introduction throughout the four academic years aimed to enhance the speaking, reading and writing skills using general and nursing related texts and situations to enable them to cope with the program efficiently.
Computer Application in Nursing 1 (Credit Hours 01)
The following topics will be covered. Basic concepts of computer application in daily professional use. Learning to operate Microsoft Office and browse internet for searching web articles.
Sociology (Credit Hours 03)
The following topics will be covered. Orientation to the cultural situation in Pakistan. Origins of man and his cultural development; dynamics of behavior and personality; social institutions; the community; and sociological implications for nursing.
Islamiyat, Behavioural Ethics (Credit Hours 02)
The following topics will be covered. Critical examination of issues related to Islamic tradition and formulation of their key religious concepts. Discussing ways in which these concepts formulate a Muslim philosophy in providing nursing care to individuals and families in a variety of clinical settings and in their own lives.
Teaching & Learning: Principles and Practices (Credit Hours 03)
The following topics will be covered. Knowledge and application of modern teaching methods used to enhance learning. Development of knowledge and skills in writing learning objectives, facilitation of learning and usage of educational theories to develop lesson plans.
Pakistan Studies (Credit Hours 02)
The following topics will be covered. Introduction to ideology and the emergence of Islamic rule in Pakistan. Attention is given to the various developments leading to and following the creation of Pakistan as an Islamic state, including study of the constitution and foreign policies.
Professional Development (Credit Hours 03)
The following topics will be covered. Overview of the social forces and issues faced by the nursing profession in Pakistan.
Introduction to various concepts and skills such as communication and interpersonal relationship, empowerment, assertiveness, group dynamics, critical & reflective thinking, and trends in Nursing.
Nursing Theory (Credit Hours 03)
The following topics will be covered. Focus on the understanding of different nursing theories and its implications in clinical practice. Emphasis will be given on practical applications of nursing theories with the help of simulation and clinical observation.
Advanced concepts in Community Health Nursing (Credit Hours 06)
The following topics will be covered. Focus on the knowledge and skills required for advanced nursing practice in community setting. It will enhance the learner’s ability to work with communities by utilizing nursing process and epidemiological concepts.
Senior Electives: Clinical Nursing (Credit Hours 05)
The following topics will be covered. Development of ability to integrate application of nursing concepts with a client population of interest. Work with preceptors in a variety of settings. Formulation of learning objectives and experiences within the context of the course
